South Yard Structures

Modern reproductions of the structures where domestic and skilled slaves lived and worked during the Madison era were built by Salvagewrights over a period of years from 2015-2020.

The structures were built on top of their original footprints and include two slave quarter duplexes,

a spinning house, two smokehouses, and a kitchen.

The first building to be constructed in the South Yard was a slave quarter duplex.

Salvagewrights led a week-long workshop in which participants took part in

the reconstruction.
